Hyperlinks

Here you will find links of interest. Some of them are referenced elsewhere on this site, others are entirely novel. If you know me and would like to see your site referenced, feel free to email me and I will do my best to include it.

Academic

The Arxiv. The Los Alamos Electronic Preprint Server. Math and physics articles galore.  Daily preprints in String Theory can be found here.

Columbia University Mathematics Department. Where I went to graduate school. Excellent small department, with a lot of interesting research going on in a number of fields, including geometry and topology.

Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. An excellent place to do analysis, computer science or partial differential equations. Also quite good at geometry and topology.

Loop Quantum Gravity.  A book by Carlo Rovelli, available as a free PDF download in draft format.  Excellent introduction to a difficult (even arcane) subject.

Martial Arts

Academic Training Traditions. The website of Paul Cote; a martial artist and biochemist who teaches bagua, xingyi, and taiji in a manner that is very mindful of their roles as martial practices. Paul is a long time student of Robert Smith and Zhang Yun and an excellent source for instruction in the internal arts.

Edgework. The website of Ellis Amdur; a martial artist and psychologist and writer (and extremely genuine and ethical person) who lives and works in Seattle, WA. Not strictly a martial arts website, but you can find links to some of his essays and books. Highly recommended.

Itten Dōjō. A dōjō teaching aikidō and iaidō in Enola, PA. Run by Bob Wolfe, a student of Ellis Amdur, who is continuing to help develop Itten Dōjō's aikidō curriculum. A very beautiful training space filled with very competent martial artists.

Koryū Books. Speaking of Meik and Diane, here is a link to their website, a resource on classical martial traditions (koryū) of Japan.

Capital Aikikai. A good aikidō dōjō in Silver Spring, MD.  A very nice bunch of people.  One or two hidden dragons live there as well.

Physical Training Traditions. Website of Allen Pittman, teacher of Gao Yishen lineage bagua zhang and xingyi quan.

Empty Flower. An excellent website devoted to the Chinese Internal arts, primarily xingyi quan, but teacher directories and forums include bagua zhang and taiji quan as well.

The Yushinkan. The Yushinkan is a Daito-ryu Takumakai shibu (branch) in NYC which teaches a traditional form of aiki-jujutsu as passed down by students of Takuma Hisa, who trained under Takeda Sokaku and Ueshiba Morihei in Daito-ryu. It is a small, and dedicated, group, worth investigating as a source of training in aiki if you are in the tri-state area.

Kashima Shinryu. Kashima Shnryu is a koryu (classical Japanese martial art) which teaches kenjutsu and jujutsu, as well as a number of other arts. Their website has links to their North American chapters, as well as interesting articles on Kashima Shinryu teachings and history.

Modern Neijia Arts Institute. The MNAI is a Su Dongchen Essence of Evolution study group led by Stuart Finkelstein in Minneapolis, MN where my friends David and Troy train. They focus on combative applications of internal martial arts. Also of note in Minneapolis is Twin Cities Tai Chi, a Chinese Internal Martial Arts school in Minneapolis that my friend David Dettloff also trains at. While not training in EOE, Troy and David often spend time at Troy's house analyzing entries into, and counters of, jujutsu locking and throwing techniques. Their practice space is quite small -- Troy has named it "The Micro Dojo".

Yoga / Tantra

Midtown Yoga. A very open and positive Yoga Studio located in Mt. Vernon, Baltimore. Their signature style is Vinyasa Yoga, but the studio offers classes in Astanga Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and other Yoga styles as well.

Sonic Yoga. A very nice yoga studio in Hell's Kitchen (long gone are the days of Lawrence Block's manhattan -- Hell's Kitchen is nice now, I promise), specializing in Vinyasa (flow) yoga.

Sivananda Yoga Centers. I primarily practice Vinyasa yoga; however, the Sivananda Yoga website has a lot of information about the yoga path in general. I've found it useful.

Santosha. A link from my friend Laura; it has a guide to sanskrit names of the different asanas, yoga sutras, and media reviews. They also sell stuff. See my stores links for more yoga suppliers.

Shingon Heaven Earth Net.  The Shingon Buddhist International Institute, which has some information about different Buddhist deities and mantra and sutras, including the practices of kengyo and mikkyo.

Empty Universe. A Buddhism website with various sutras and teachings translated into the English language.

Friends

The Ink Lab. David Dettloff owns a tattoo shop in Minneapolis, MN. If you are in the midwest, and need some Ink, this is the place to go. David's personal website, with some of his art, is here.

Main Sequence. Tom Bryant, ex-astronomer slash ex-astrophysicist and general NASA smarty pants has a very idiosyncratic but interesting web site. He is also, in his spare time, the chair of the Left-Handed Physics Club, often seen scribbling madly on paper while they should be eating their lunch.

Mara Wave 4 Fine Art. The website of my aunt Bungy, who is an artist. Her motto: "What I see is what you get."

Stores

Barefoot Yoga. A supplier of cool yoga rugs and yoga bags.

Prana. The best climbing and yoga clothes for clement weather. They also have black yoga mats for Industrial / Techno / EBM people like me who don't want pale blue or pink.

Patagonia. The best climbing clothes for inclement weather. Uknown to me at the time, I played with the owner's son when I was four and we were in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Then a storm came in and my father was stranded on one of the mountains overnight. Thanks to one Chiounard number two stopper, I still have someone to talk to about climbing.

Bujin Design. Excellent martial arts weapons bags and hakama (trousers) for budō practice.

Headroom. Audiophile headphone amplifiers and headphones galore. For those of us who like to listen to music when we code or run. Some excellent headphones there for travel as well, to block out ambient noise.

Audiogon. Used hi-fi marketplace. Search classified ads, post stuff. The audio version of Ebay. Save some money and still satisfy your audio jones.

Miscellaneous

GMap Pedometer. A running route distance calculator using the Google Maps Beta.  You input waypoints and it calculates running distance along that path.  A very neat application of web-based technology.

to be able to give birth to a dancing star."
